Discover Ancient Civilizations

Designed to enhance an appreciation and understanding of ancient languages, societies, and cultures, the ancient studies program will help you to think more deeply about the human condition and the important issues in our lives. Coursework will strengthen your critical thinking abilities, primarily through language acquisition. Topics of study include grammar, translation, interpretation, text analysis, historical perspective, and the influence of ancient civilizations.

Students pursuing a career in health or law — or those simply interested in the evolution of ancient civilizations and their impact —  will find minoring in ancient studies is to their advantage. To be awarded the ancient studies minor, students must be competent in a language other than English.

Curriculum throughout the ancient studies minor and certificate will require you to analyze the diverse experiences of — or viewpoints from — past events or historical developments. You will learn how the culture and traditions of ancient civilizations can inform the present while comparing and connecting regional and global civilizations. Assessing evidence from archaeological remains; documents and inscriptions; sculpture, painting, and architecture; theory and literary patterns; and historical developments of these phenomena allows you to recognize continuity and change over time as well as describe their consequences.

Ancient Near Eastern Civilizations

In-depth survey of the political, social, and cultural history of ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt, Syro-Palestine, Anatolia, and Iran from the rise of cities to Alexander the Great.

HIST 304

Greek Civilization

A history of the Greeks beginning with the Bronze Age and continuing through the Alexandrian or Hellenistic period. Stress on cultural contributions of each successive period.

HIST 308

Ancient Historiography

In-depth examination of the works of selected ancient historians, their methodology, purpose, and place in the tradition.
