The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's certificate in Africana studies is designed for students interested in deepening their knowledge about African people, the African diasporic and African American lives. Curriculum throughout the program will enable you to examine the major historical events that have created and shaped the African diaspora, analyze the experiences and cultural products of people of African descent and contemporary issues faced by African Americans.
The majority of the 12-credit certificate is made up of courses chosen by you, allowing you to personalize your studies and focus on the topics that most interest you. Study the evolution of jazz, learn more about the African American civil rights movement, examine feminist perspectives on various topics from an African American standpoint, or better understand the Black lived experience in modern American society.
Program Details
The Africana studies certificate is made up of courses — many chosen by you — from a wide range of disciplines, including history; music; English; religious studies; psychology; political science; women's, gender, and sexuality studies; and more. Through this diverse curriculum, you'll learn about a variety of subjects from an array of faculty members, each with different backgrounds and areas of expertise.
In addition to picking course electives, you'll also have the opportunity to pursue special topics, internships, and umbrella courses with a focus on Africana studies. These experiences not only count for credit but also will allow you to explore passions and possible career paths — all while gaining real-world experience, too.

The multidisciplinary curriculum in the Africana studies certificate will examine the social, cultural and political aspects of major events, experiences and cultural products of people of African descent. Choose from an array of courses — from politics to psychology to religion — that will broaden your understanding of the historical and contemporary experiences of African Americans in the United States.

Modern Africa
Examines the major components of Modern African history. Among topics for study are African civilizations, European contact, slavery, colonialism, independence movements, African nationalism as well as more recent political, social, cultural and economic change.
HIST 345
Civil Rights and American Memory
This course explores the public memory of the civil rights movement through class lecture, discussion and participation in UW-Eau Claire's Civil Rights Pilgrimage. Students will examine the importance of individual agency, historical contingency, and social change.
HIST 210
African American History 1865 to Present
Course includes information on lynching, the Civil Rights Movement, and race relations.
